Dr Vuyolwethu Mxo’s research sits at the intersection of social-ecological systems, Indigenous knowledge systems, and ecological engineering, with a strong focus on coastal rehabilitation and stakeholder engagement. Dr Vuyolwethu Mxo works across disciplines, integrating botany, marine science, and social science to better understand the complex relationships between people, ecosystems, and livelihoods.
Dr Vuyolwethu Mxo’s work is driven by a commitment to weaving academic knowledge with Indigenous and local knowledge systems. Dr Vuyolwethu Mxo is particularly interested in how these knowledge systems can inform sustainable ecosystem management, especially in coastal and wetland environments facing increasing environmental and socio-economic pressures. Through this integrative approach, Dr Vuyolwethu Mxo has explored nature-based solutions that support both ecological resilience and community well-being. A central component of my research involves working collaboratively with local communities, recognising them as knowledge holders and active partners in environmental stewardship. Dr Vuyolwethu Mxo is passionate about co-producing knowledge that is not only scientifically robust but also socially relevant and accessible.
