In a country where poverty and unemployment remain deeply rooted in many rural communities, especially in Limpopo Province, innovative and sustainable solutions are urgently needed. This featured article—originally published in Quest magazine—highlights a collaborative research project led by scientists from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB), and SANParks. The project explores how inland fisheries at Flag Boshielo and Glen Alpine dams could serve as viable sources of nutrition, employment, and economic activity for surrounding communities.

With a strong focus on data-driven environmental management and community involvement, the research seeks to inform South Africa’s national strategy on freshwater fisheries. It also underscores the urgent need for policy reform, sustainable fishing practices, and integrated management approaches that prioritise both ecological and socio-economic well-being.
