Beyond the Surface: Using cutting-edge technology for marine exploration
South Africa, renowned for its vibrant biodiversity, faces an urgent need for enhanced marine biomonitoring. Using cutting-edge techniques, such as environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis from seawater and natural eDNA samplers such as marine sponges, presents a promising solution. As part of a multi-disciplinary Deep Connections project, Jody will showcase some of the interesting work conducted in the waters of the iSimangaliso Marine Protected Area and World Heritage Site. She will demonstrate how eDNA metabarcoding is an invaluable tool for the detection and monitoring of fishes in this vital marine ecosystem.
