The National Research Foundation’s South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (NRF-SAIAB) welcomed more than 750 visitors to its headquarters in Makhanda on Friday, 24 July 2026, for its National Science Month Open Day, providing learners, members of the public and stakeholders with a rare opportunity to experience the exciting world of aquatic biodiversity research firsthand.
The event formed part of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation’s (DSTI) National Science Month programme, which aims to inspire greater public interest in science, technology and innovation while encouraging young people to consider careers in science.
Throughout the day, visitors explored NRF-SAIAB’s research facilities, interacted with scientists, students, interns and support staff, and participated in a wide range of engaging, hands-on science activities. Interactive exhibits showcased the Institute’s cutting-edge research in aquatic biodiversity, genomics, freshwater and marine ecosystems and conservation science, demonstrating how scientific research contributes to understanding and protecting South Africa’s aquatic resources.
The Open Day also reflected the spirit of collaboration within the South African science community. NRF-SAIAB was joined by exhibition partners from NRF-South African Environmental Observation Network (NRF-SAEON), Rhodes University’s Department of Ichthyology and Fisheries Science (DIFS), Rhodes University’s Department of Zoology and Entomology and the Albany Museum, each providing interactive displays and activities that broadened visitors’ exposure to biodiversity, environmental science and research opportunities.
School learners made up the majority of attendees, with educators, families, community members and institutional stakeholders also participating. For many visitors, the Open Day provided their first opportunity to step inside a national research facility, meet scientists and discover the diverse career pathways available in science, research and environmental conservation.
One of the highlights of the day was the extensive media interest generated by the event. NRF-SAIAB’s Open Day received national television coverage from SABC News, helping to showcase the Institute’s research and public engagement initiatives to audiences across South Africa. The national exposure further reinforced the importance of making scientific research accessible and relevant to society.
The overwhelming public response and strong attendance underscore the growing interest in science engagement initiatives that connect research with society. By opening its doors to the public, NRF-SAIAB continues to inspire curiosity, promote scientific literacy and strengthen relationships with communities, schools and stakeholders.
