Gold in the mud: A global overview of mud crab (Scylla spp.) fishery
Mud crabs (genus Scylla) are a globally significant fishery commodity in many tropical and subtropical coastal regions, owing to their high market value and local economic importance. Their habitat spans diverse estuarine and mangrove systems, where artisanal fishers and aquaculturists harvest or farm them for domestic and international markets. Rapid expansion of the fishery over the past few decades has raised issues related to overexploitation, habitat loss, and inadequate governance frameworks.
Khor Waiho will be providing a global overview of current mud crab production trends, socioeconomic benefits, and challenges faced by both capture fisheries and aquaculture sectors in this presentation. Particular attention is given to emerging management strategies, including community-based initiatives, stock enhancement, and the integration of more sustainable husbandry practices. Understanding these dynamics, identifying feasible interventions, and promoting inter-country collaboration are essential for ensuring the long-term viability, ecological sustainability, and continued success of this valuable fishery resource.
