Triple Threat: Understanding Crayfish Invasion Dynamics in Kruger National Park
Redclaw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus), first recorded in Kruger National Park in 2016, are rapidly expanding invasive freshwater species with serious ecological consequences. This seminar series explores the invasion from multiple perspectives: Dr Danai Kontou examines spread rates and population dynamics; James Hodson investigates how crayfish alternative fish communities and biodiversity; and Emma Baker uses long-term macroinvertebrate monitoring to predict ecosystem-level impacts and identify vulnerable taxa. Together, these talks provide a comprehensive view of how redclaw crayfish are reshaping freshwater ecosystems in Kruger National Park and inform strategies for proactive, adaptive management.
