NRF-SAIAB holds the Annual Smith Memorial Lecture in memory of J.L.B. and Margaret Mary Smith, commemorating their legacy of discovery and research in ichthyology and related fields. This year, NRF-SAIAB welcomes Dr Denise M Schael as guest speaker for the Annual Smith Memorial Lecture, which will take place on 22 October 2026.
This year’s Smith Memorial Lecture, titled “From Specimens to Systems: Reimagining Aquatic Science for a Changing World,” will reflect on how the practice of aquatic science has changed over time. Drawing on a career that began with zooplankton and larval fish in the lakes of Wisconsin and later expanded across reservoir fisheries, hydroacoustics, ecological modelling, South African rivers, macroinvertebrates, estuaries, temporary wetlands, and ocean and coastal science leadership, Dr Schael will explore the evolution of the field.
