Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes at the National Research Foundation’s South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (NRF-SAIAB)?

As part of National Science Month 2026, NRF-SAIAB is opening its doors to the public for an exciting Open Day on Friday, 24 July 2026, from 09:00 to 16:00 at our headquarters, 11 Somerset Street, Makhanda.

Whether you’re a learner exploring future career opportunities, a university student, educator, family, or simply curious about science, this is your chance to discover how aquatic biodiversity research contributes to understanding, protecting and sustainably managing South Africa’s freshwater and marine ecosystems.

Visitors will have the opportunity to:

  • Meet our researchers, students, interns and support staff.
  • Explore our laboratories, collections and research facilities.
  • Take part in interactive, hands-on science activities.
  • Learn about careers in aquatic biodiversity, environmental science and research.
  • Discover how every role at NRF-SAIAB contributes to advancing science and conserving South Africa’s unique aquatic biodiversity.

The Open Day offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at one of South Africa’s leading national research facilities, showcasing the innovative research, technologies and people driving solutions for healthy aquatic ecosystems and sustainable futures.
