Global Scientists Gather at NRF-SAIAB for Species Discovery Workshop After Comoros Expedition

From 26 January to 13 February 2026, the NRF-South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (NRF-SAIAB) hosted the Nekton Ocean Census Comoros Species Discovery Workshop in Makhanda. The workshop formed part of the broader Nippon Foundation-Nekton Ocean Census programme, a global initiative aimed at accelerating the discovery and description of marine species.

Twelve scientists from the Ocean Census Science Network gathered at NRF-SAIAB to examine specimens collected during a 31-day expedition to the Union of Comoros in October 2025.

The expedition explored the steep volcanic reefs in the northern Mozambique Channel – ecosystems rich in biodiversity yet still largely underexplored. Using advanced underwater video systems, researchers surveyed mesophotic reef ecosystems between 30 m and 120 m, with additional sampling from the surface down to 900 m.

According to Ocean Census, discovery continues in laboratories at NRF-SAIAB. Taxonomists are carefully analysing specimens that may include species new to science. This quieter phase of exploration – where research shifts from ship to microscope – plays a critical role in documenting biodiversity and supporting marine spatial planning, including the Comoros’ 30×30 ocean protection goals.

Importantly, specimens are curated in both Comoros and South Africa, strengthening long-term scientific capacity and regional collaboration. NRF-SAIAB provided laboratory space, specimen curation facilities, sequencing support, and logistical coordination for the duration of the workshop. All collected material was housed at NRF-SAIAB, and type material remains curated at the Institute following the workshop.

The workshop has also prioritised mentorship and skills development which created opportunities for early career scientists to contribute to global biodiversity research. The expedition and subsequent workshop reflected the power of partnership, made possible through collaboration between Ocean Census, Nekton, the Government of Comoros, Kensington Tours, R-POC partners including Wildoceans and NRF-SAIAB.

By hosting this international species discovery workshop, NRF-SAIAB reinforced its commitment to the advancement of marine biodiversity research; support of global scientific collaboration; and contributions to the documentation and protection of ocean life. At NRF-SAIAB, ocean discovery continues – advancing science, building capacity, and revealing the hidden life of the Indian Ocean.
