Effects of Habitat Restoration in an Urbanised Harbour in Bergen, Norway
Bergen, Norway’s second largest city and “Marine capital”, has experienced substantial pressure on marine environments due to urbanisation. As a result, harbour areas in Bergen have historically been considered poorly suited for many key species, and ecosystem services such as fisheries and recreation have been considered depleted or completely ruined. Over the past eight years however, harbour areas have undergone extensive restoration through the “Renere Havn Bergen” project. As a part of the most recent restoration effort, the Norwegian Research Centre conducted an impact study in the “Store Lungegårdsvannet” harbour area. This presentation will look at the results from the impact study, discuss their implications and briefly highlight the importance of such studies as well as the newest collaboration between the Norwegian Research Centre and NRF-SAIAB.
